Exploring Mindfulness and Coaching

by Paddy Spruce

Mindful Coaching will help you bring a new level of awareness and focus to everything you do and open up your ability to enjoy life outside your mind.

Let me assume that you don’t know about mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a three legged stool. Three areas of focus that help us to live more vital, interesting and productive lives: a way of living life more fully; freedom from thoughts that drive us; just accepting whatever happens.

The first focus is Being Present, living now instead of yesterday or tomorrow.

The second focus is Being Aware, instead of being preoccupied with unhelpful thoughts.

The third focus is Accepting, instead of rejecting what happens.

A Mindful Activity is to focus on being fully present in whatever you are doing. If someone is speaking, you focus on listening. If you are driving, you give it your full attention. Even drinking coffee can be a wonderful experience if it’s given your full attention. If you are lost in your thoughts when drinking your coffee, you may as well drink hot water. Try it for yourself.

Mindful Coaching can help with :

  • Stress
  • Disturbed Sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Attention Deficit
  • Procrastination
  • Time and Energy Management
  • Handling Difficult Conversations
  • Listening Under Pressure
  • Workplace Performance and Leadership
  • The Fear of Public Speaking
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Lifestyle Enhancement
  • General Well Being

Mindful Coaching involves moving through a typical set of steps:

  1. Setting Goals and identifying important values
  2. Identifying what is presently working and not working
  3. Examining and discussing options to achieve goals and integrate values
  4. Developing an action plan

Mindful Coaching brings a deeper perspective to all four steps.

Mindful Coaching will also help you to change your relationship to your thoughts. Rather than trying to distract yourself from unhelpful thoughts, you learn to live with these thoughts and understand that they will pass.

So, coaching can be enhanced significantly by being done Mindfully. Coaching can make a difference to your life. If done Mindfully, there is more authenticity, compassion and better outcomes and the person being coached learns how to bring a Mindful dimension to everything they do.

Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, the author of 'Flow', says that the excellence of daily life finally depends not on what we do but on how we do it.

Imagine how effective you would be if you did everything with your full attention.
