Newsletter: August 2010

Welcome to this first newsletter in several months. Despite every good intention time has run away - although it's not been wasted. We've been establishing new business networks with some interesting possibilities that we'll refer you to over time. Plus, training a raft of MBA and undergraduate students to become leaders.

This last project, with its associated research, has led to us making the skills gap the focus of this newsletter: exploring the evidence, the actual skills needed and the links to how we can assist.

Skill Shortages and Gaps.

Reports of skills shortages have surfaced over the past few months, linked most recently to the population debate. See Q&A ABC, August 13

We're no longer talking just trade and technical skills, hugely important as they are. Some stark realities are emerging: retirement of baby boomers will leave vast gaps in skill and knowledge, according to the Federal Education Department, 4.5 million Australians are functionally illiterate, and despite the Karpin Report 1995, lack of management skills are still a major problem.

A survey of vacancies by the Australian Industry group reported in The Australian Higher Education supplement (July 14), found skills shortages in key professions and vocations pose a significant threat to our economic growth - download Skills shortages: A high risk business the AIG National CEO survey.

What are the skills gaps? The AIG survey lists specialised skills, including business administration management, broad-based skills; and interesting,'a poor attitude displayed by applicants'(27.8%).

A survey by the Australian Institute of Management, Australia’s Workforce 'Skills Gap' December 2009, listed amongst the top 5 skills gaps: leadership (45%), process/project management (36%), managerial (31%) and communication/interpersonal (31%). Respondents (51%) said middle managers, including business owners, were experiencing the most significant skills gap.

Leadership, management and interpersonal skills rank high in these surveys. Add to these the findings of the Leadership Management Australia's L.E.A.D. Survey Top 5 Qualities of Leaders and Managers for the Future - Employee View (2010): Is fair and even-handed/makes reasonable demands; Clearly communicates where we are going; Gives regular and honest feedback on how I am going; Listens to and respects my input into decisions; Is trustworthy and open in approach.

Building Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal skills, Emotional Intelligence (EQ or EI), can be defined as the ability to understand, manage, and effectively express one's own feelings, as well as engage and navigate successfully with those of others can be learned.

Preston Ni's blog Five Keys to Enhancing Your EQ, July 28 describes five that you can practice:

  • The ability to deal with one's negative emotions
  • The ability to stay cool under pressure
  • The ability to read social cues
  • The ability to be assertive and express difficult emotions when necessary
  • The ability to express intimate emotions in close, personal relationships
